13 charged over Sunderland mosque protest
Fascists throwing firecrackers at counter-demonstrators during last October’s protest
Police have charged 13 people after a demonstration at the site of a new mosque in Sunderland turned violent, as far-right groups including the EDL clashed with local Muslims and anti-fascists.
Around 200 people attended the pre-planned demonstration on St Mark’s Road in Millfield on Saturday, October 6, 2012, where a former council transport depot is being converted into a mosque for up to 150 Pakistani Muslims.
The English Defence League, Scottish Defence League and Sunderland Anti-Fascist Coalition were among the protesters. Continue reading
EDL vows to return to Cambridge in bigger numbers
The English Defence League has vowed to return to Cambridge in bigger numbers – despite a low turnout and several arrests.
Its rally on Christ’s Pieces on Saturday ended early after only about 40 members turned up. More than 400 officers were drafted in to police them and a counter-demonstration by Cambridge Unite Against Fascism which had more than 500 people in its ranks, according to police.
Members of EDL mob who attacked Plymouth takeaway are sentenced
Two women joined a racist mob which attacked and abused a terrified Kurdish family in a city centre takeaway, a court heard.
Hayley Wells, aged 28, and 30-year-old Kelly Watterson were part of a group which spilled out of a pub and hurled vile abuse on a Sunday afternoon. Someone threw a glass which smashed next to a baby in a car seat inside the Istanbul kebab shop in Exeter Street, Plymouth Crown Court heard.
Wells scratched the boy’s mother on the arm and Watterson admitted she was drunk and aggressive as part of the mob, which had been attending a meeting of the English Defence League. The mother and her partner were so shaken that they have since sold the takeaway.
Recorder Paul Derbyshire said: “This was a shocking and violent incident which left these victims in a distressed state. This has led to the closure of the business and they have moved away.” He handed Wells a suspended prison sentence and Watterson a community order. Both must do hefty periods of unpaid work.
Derisory turnout for EDL protest in Cambridge, heavily outnumbered by counter-demonstrators
Hundreds of protesters marched through Cambridge to oppose a rally by the far-right English Defence League (EDL) which saw a major police operation launched in the city.
The EDL rally on Christ’s Pieces ended early after only about 40 activists turned up, and they were heavily outnumbered by the Unite Against Fascism (UAF) counter-demonstration, which was attended by at least 500 people.
EDL member boasts about anti-Muslim vandalism
EDL News reports that an English Defence League member named Diane Scrimshaw – one of the few in Essex who has remained loyal to the EDL leadership – one of the few in Essex who has remained loyal to the EDL leadership – has been boasting on Facebook about the damage she caused to a property in Westcliff-on-Sea owned by the Jaafriya Islamic Welfare Centre.
(The building was allegedly used as a mosque without planning permission, and has been the target of protests by the National Front, the British National Party and Britain First.)
First Scrimshaw appealed to her “edl friends” to inbox her as she had “something planned” for later in the week. She followed this up by posting a photograph of a flattened wall outside the Jaafriya Centre’s building and added: “We went down Southend illegal mosque (just a shame the wall fell down PMSL).”
One of her Facebook friends commented “Vandal!”, to which Scrimshaw replied: “I admit it Richard lol.”
Hundreds to protest against Cambridge EDL rally
Calls for students to join an anti-English Defence League march through Cambridge this Saturday have heightened following Marine Le Pen’s visit to the Cambridge Union earlier this week.
It was revealed in December that the English Defence League (EDL) would be staging a demonstration against the building of a new mosque on Mill Road. Police confirmed last month that the far-right group would be holding a “static protest”, rather than marching through the city.
The Cambridge branch of Unite Against Fascism (CUAF) responded by calling for a counter-demonstration on the same day. More than 1,000 people have said on the Facebook event page they will be attending the anti-EDL protest.
Drug dealer slashed men with cut-throat razor in brutal attack by EDL gang
A drug dealing English Defence League supporter slashed two men with a cut throat razor during a brutal gang attack at a pub.
Twenty-six year-old Marcus Ward went on the run for two-and-a-half years following the attack in March 2010, only handing himself in to police in September last year.
Judge Jonathan Foster QC branded Ward a “dangerous man” at Manchester’s Minshull Street Crown Court as he jailed him a total of 11 years.
Fears over position of EDL rally in Cambridge
Parts of Cambridge could be “shut down” by police because of Saturday’s English Defence League (EDL) rally in a city park. The far-right group will be fenced in on a corner of Christ’s Pieces next to Drummer Street bus station where they will have a stage and speakers.
More than 400 officers will police the event as well as a counter-demonstration by Cambridge Unite Against Fascism (CUAF). The Cambridgeshire force has cancelled all leave for officers on Saturday.
But there has been criticism of the choice of the park. Tony Carter, chairman of Cambridgeshire TUC, said: “We were shocked when we heard the EDL would be in Christ’s Pieces right next to the bus station and the playground. Lots of families pass through the park and children use it to play in.”
Kevin Carroll announces EDL ‘festival’ in Luton
The English Defence League has said it is planning a festival this summer, Luton on Sunday can reveal. Kevin Carroll, the joint-leader of the group, said that the EDL will “be coming back to Luton this year” and holding a festival in St George’s Square.
He said: “We’ll be coming back to Luton this year that’s for sure. We did consider, from the demonstration point of view, but then we thought about a festival. We are going to call it Love EDL Hate Racism and then we can have bands, music and entertainment.”
Mr Carroll also said that the group would be inviting a host of international speakers including controversial Dutch politician Geert Wilders and Danish activist Anders Gravers Pedersen. He also said that American activists Pamela Geller, Robert Spencer and Rabbi Nachum Shifren were being lined up.
