Veil is ‘an invitation to rape’ – BHL

The JC interviews French philospher Bernard-Henri Levy:

“Our time is almost up, but BHL becomes the most animated I have seen him when I ask him about Jack Straw’s intervention on Muslim women and the veil. ‘Jack Straw’, he says, leaning close to me, ‘made a great point. He did not say that he was against the veil. He said it is much easier, much more comfortable, respectful, to speak with a woman with a naked face. And without knowing, he quoted Levinas, who is the philosopher of the face. Levinas says that [having seen] the naked face of your interlocutor, you cannot kill him or her, you cannot rape him, you cannot violate him. So when the Muslims say that the veil is to protect women, it is the contrary. The veil is an invitation to rape’.”

Mad Mel and the BNP on the clash of civilisations

Taking up the report in yesterday’s Daily Telegraph, Melanie Phillips announces that “France is currently under violent siege from the jihad – and buckling under the onslaught”. This supposedly demolishes the claim that last year’s French riots were “about poverty and unemployment and other such sub-Marxist claptap” – they were “actually all about French Muslims declaring their turf to be no-go areas for the French state”.

Melanie Phillips’s Diary, 6 October 2006

Mel’s co-thinkers in the British National Party concur: “The 21st century clash of civilisations is leading to bloodshed on the streets of Paris … with police officers being daily injured in rioting by Islamics.” The fascists predict: “The security authorities across western Europe have so far only had a mere glimpse of what horrors the next decade will deliver to their respective nation states. The sheer stupidity and criminality of the political leaders who have allowed an army of Islamic fifth columnists into our host nations will be repaid by chaos, death and destruction but it will be the ordinary voters who suffer; not those responsible for bringing about the apocalyptic end of Europe.”

Muslims are waging civil war against us, claims police union

“Radical Muslims in France’s housing estates are waging an undeclared ‘intifada’ against the police, with violent clashes injuring an average of 14 officers each day. As the interior ministry said that nearly 2,500 officers had been wounded this year, a police union declared that its members were ‘in a state of civil war’ with Muslims in the most depressed ‘banlieue’ estates which are heavily populated by unemployed youths of north African origin.”

French philosophy teacher in hiding after attack on Islam

Robert RedekerA French philosophy teacher yesterday entered his third week in hiding after writing a newspaper comment piece calling the prophet Muhammad a merciless warlord and mass-murderer.

Robert Redeker, 52, who teaches at a suburban Toulouse high school, this week won the support of famous French intellectuals including the philosopher Bernard-Henri Lévy, who warned that death threats against him were an attack on freedom of speech akin to the persecution of Salman Rushdie.

The teacher, whose latest book, Depression and Philosophy, is about to be published, does not shy away from controversy. A member of the board of Les Temps Modernes, a review founded by Jean-Paul Sartre, he criticised French pacifists at the start of the Iraq war.

In a comment piece in Le Figaro on September 19, he said Muhammad was “a merciless warlord, a looter, a mass-murderer of Jews and a polygamist”. He called the Qur’an “a book of incredible violence” and contrasted what he said were Christianity’s peaceful roots and Islam’s violent ones, adding: “Jesus is a master of love, Muhammad a master of hate.”

The case has become a political issue. Philippe de Villiers, head of the far-right Movement for France party, suggested that President Jacques Chirac should shelter Mr Redeker at the Elysée Palace.

‘France will be an Islamic state in only one generation’ – former Tory warns of Muslim threat

Radical Islam poses to Western civilization a threat similar to that of the Nazis and the Soviets, Winston Churchill said Sept. 26 at Union University.

Churchill – author, journalist, former Member of Parliament and grandson of the former British prime minister – spoke before about 1,800 people at Union’s 10th annual Scholarship Banquet to raise funds for students scholarships.

“Together we have overcome far more powerful enemies than those that assail us today,” Churchill said. “I have every confidence that, in confronting this new challenge, America and Britain – together with our allies – can prevail and shall prevail, just as together we have triumphed in the past.”

The threat from radical Islam comes in two forms, Churchill said. The first is the global terrorist threat that everyone recognizes. The second is a demographic threat confronting Europe.

For example, Churchill pointed to the population trends in France, where 10 percent of the population is Islamic. But among those 20 years of age and younger, that percentage rises to 30 percent. Given the rates at which Muslims reproduce, that means France will be an Islamic state in only one generation.

“Europe is sleepwalking towards disaster,” Churchill said. “We would sooner commit national suicide than be accused of being politically incorrect.”

Mosques attacked in France, Russia

Vandals scrawled swastikas and racist slogans on the walls of two mosques in France and threw Molotov cocktails at a mosque in central Russia on Sunday, September 24, the day French and Russian Muslims started celebrating Ramadan.

The mosque which was torched, in the northwest town of Quimper, suffered damage from the flames. Six swastikas were painted on the outside of its walls, Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported Monday, September 25. In the southwestern town of Carcassonne, the other mosque was daubed with swastikas and slogans reading “France for the French”, “Arabs get out” and “Death to Islam”, officials said.

In central Russia, unidentified attackers threw Molotov cocktails at a mosque in Yaroslavl in the early hours of Sunday, but the building did not catch fire, the head of a local Muslim organization said.

A religious service was taking place at the time and there were worshippers in the room, but the bottles hit the window frame and fell back without exploding, he explained. The attackers also threw stones, breaking a number of mosque windows as well as the windows of cars parked in the courtyard.

Mosque set ablaze in Brittany town of Quimper in western France

QUIMPER, France — Intruders set a mosque ablaze in this city in western France early Sunday and scrawled swastikas on the outside walls, officials said.

Firefighters called to the scene at 4:20 A.M. local time extinguished the blaze, said Philippe Paolantoni, deputy prefect of the region, in Brittany. The prosecutor’s office opened an investigation.

Damages to the mosque were modest despite four separate fires set inside the Penhars Mosque, one of two Muslim places of worship in Quimper.

A window was found open, apparently used to access the inside of the mosque, Paolantoni said, adding that a passerby alerted firefighters after seeing swastikas scrawled on the outside walls of the mosque and flames inside.

There are occasional reports of attacks on Muslim places of worship in France, as well as on Jewish synagogues, and authorities have increased surveillance

The attack on the Quimper mosque came as Muslims in France began celebrating Ramadan, the annual period of fasting.

French Islamic institute fights Islamophobia

France’s first Islamic government-backed institute will open in October in the northern city of Lille to counter the rising Islamophobia phenomenon and groom qualified imams and preachers.

“The need was so pressing to have such an institute to counter prevailing Islamophobia,” the institute’s dean Mohammad El-Beshari told IslamOnline.net.

“The institute, which is affiliated to the University of Lille, will project the tolerant image and openness of Islam,” added Beshari, also the deputy head of the French Council for Muslim Faith (CFCM).

He said the Muslim minority, estimated at some six millions, were in a dire need to have such an educational establishment.

The institute is co-financed by the French and Qatari governments and its premises are donated by Lille Municipality.

Le Pen convicted of inciting race hatred

Jean-Marie Le PenFrance’s highest court yesterday convicted the far-right leader Jean-Marie Le Pen of inciting racial hatred for telling a newspaper in 2003 that Muslims would one day run France and strike fear into the hearts of the non-Muslim population. The ruling by the Court of Cassation came just over two years after Le Pen was originally convicted in the same case.

In February 2005, an appeals court confirmed the 2004 ruling against the president of the National Front party. Le Pen was ordered to pay a €10,000 (£6,800) fine for his remarks in Le Monde and an additional €5,000 in damages and interest to the League of Human Rights, which had filed suit.

Le Pen’s party blames Muslim immigrants for an array of social woes in France, which has western Europe’s largest Muslim population. The National Front contends that Muslim immigrants are taking jobs from the French. The National Front leader is looking to run in next year’s presidential election.

In the 2003 interview Le Pen urged the French to beware of “the day in France when we have 25 million Muslims, not five million” – the estimated population of Muslims in France today – because “it is they who will command”.
