The religious zealot who hands Bibles to Muslims

The Britain First organisation, which has invaded mosques and handed out Bibles to Muslims, is masterminded by a religious zealot with a criminal record for violence.

Although usually described as a splinter group of the far-right British National Party, its roots go deeper into the hardline Christian fundamentalist, anti-abortion movement.

Britain First has begun training followers in martial arts and has adopted a green-jacketed uniform. Five police forces have launched investigations into the party over allegations including public disorder and racial hatred. The East London Mosque, which it invaded on Monday, is to ask for an antisocial behaviour order on the group.

The organisation was founded by Jim Dowson, 49, a born-again Christian who was once a successful fundraiser for the BNP, amassing millions of pounds for the party. The chairman is Paul Golding, 32, a lorry driver and one-time BNP councillor who has spent much of this year being arrested in connection with the group’s publicity-seeking stunts.

Britain First said: “Mr Golding has not been charged with any  offences.” Mr Golding last night strongly denied the allegations and insisted that none of the material he had distributed had a racial element.

To the distress of the family of the murdered soldier Lee Rigby, Mr Golding used the slogan “Remember Lee Rigby” on ballot papers for the European elections in Wales. Election day was the first anniversary of the killing and dozens of Britain First supporters commemorated it by marching through Brick Lane in east London, an area with a large Muslim population.

Evangelical Christian minister backs James McConnell, says Islam promotes killing of non-Muslims

Paul BurnsA second evangelical minister has publicly condemned Islam, comparing Muslim fundamentalists to Adolf Hitler. Pastor Paul Burns of Adullam Christian Fellowship Church in Sandy Row, south Belfast, contacted the Belfast Telegraph yesterday to voice support for Pastor James McConnell.

“I understand exactly where he is coming from,” he said. “That is not building up hatred against Muslim people but the teaching of Islam. The Koran teaches that all infidels who do not convert to Islamic teaching, then it is correct to be able to kill all those who oppose the teaching of the Koran.

“When Pastor McConnell is talking about it as a direct teaching of Satan – it is. Hitler murdered over six-and-a-half million Jewish people. I would class him as Satanic. The people who are blowing up buses are told in the teaching of the Koran they are going to have 75 virgins who are going to wait upon them, whom he would have total control over.

“Christianity teaches that Jesus Christ is the way of salvation and teaches that God is the God of love, and teaches to repent of your sins. It doesn’t teach to go out and murder in the name of Jesus Christ. It doesn’t teach to go out and burn villages down.”

Pastor Burns also voiced concern over halal meat being eaten in the UK. “Halal meat had been coming across into the UK, into our schools where Muslim clerics have prayed over the food that is actually being given to our children, who are of a Christian nation,” he said.

Belfast pastor James McConnell denounces Islam as the devil’s doctrine

Pastor James McConnellPolice have launched a probe into a a potential hate crime after an outspoken evangelical pastor defended describing the Islamic faith as “satanic” and a “doctrine spawned in hell”.

Senior Pastor James McConnell made the remarks as he addressed his congregation at the Whitewell Tabernacle Metropolitan Church on Sunday evening. They were described as “very offensive”, “hurtful” and “irresponsible” by a representative from the Belfast Islamic Centre.

There has also been an outcry on social media, with some calling for a police investigation into his comments. One posted: “If this was a Muslim Imam speaking about Christianity, he would be arrested for inciting hatred.”

During his sermon, the clergyman said: “Islam is heathen, Islam is satanic, Islam is a doctrine spawned in hell.” He also likened Muslims to the IRA, saying there were cells spread right across the UK.

When contacted by the Belfast Telegraph last night, the pastor said he stood over his remarks. When asked why he made the comments, he said “because it is against the holy scriptures”. “The Bible says there is one God the father and one Lord Jesus Christ and that is what I believe and that is what Christianity is all about.”

Dublin: Vandals tape bacon to posters of candidate with Turkish background

Memet Uludag poster defaced with baconPeople Before Profit have condemned as “outrageous” the vandalism of a party member’s posters in north Dublin.

Memet Uludag — who is originally from Turkey, but has been living in Ireland since 1998 and is now a citizen — is running for a Fingal County Council seat in the Castleknock Ward in this month’s local elections. He says that as he passed through Blanchardstown Main Street yesterday, he spotted “strange objects” attached to two of his posters. On closer inspection, he discovered that large, raw pieces of bacon had been stuck on to them with Sellotape.

“This was a clearly racially motivated vandalism,” Uludag said. “I called one of my campaign members and we took pictures. We also reported the incident to the local Garda station. The vandals obviously wanted to make a very explicit and clear racist point. Obviously presuming I am a Muslim, they clearly chose the bacon as a symbol of anti-Muslim hate.”

Outrage as Irish judge claims: ‘Muslims feel they can beat their wives’

Anthony HalpinA judge has caused outrage after saying he thinks “Muslims feel they can actually beat their wives” during the trial of a Somali man accused of burglary at his former wife’s house.

Judge Anthony Halpin’s comments made before a packed courtroom yesterday caused a government minister and the Immigrant Council of Ireland to say he needs to immediately clarify or withdraw the remark made during a criminal case.

The judge made the statement just days after telling Tallaght Court he was to be reassigned elsewhere, saying he “may have stepped on some toes”.

Leading Muslim cleric, Dr Taufiq Al Sattar – who lost his wife and three children in a house fire in the UK last year – rejected the judge’s comments. Junior minister Joe Costello said “on the surface it sounds insulting and gratuitous and he should immediately clarify the remarks”.

Minister condemns hate mail sent to Irish Muslim community, says gardaí will take ‘appropriate action’

Ireland anti-Muslim hate letter

Justice Minister Alan Shatter has condemned the sending of hate mail to the Muslim community, and said he is bringing the matter to the attention of Garda Commissioner.

An unsigned letter, which features an image of Michael Collins, was posted to a number of schools and mosques recently, threatening extreme violence if building plans for a new mosque in north Dublin get underway.

The Minister said in a statement that he utterly condemned “racism and religious bigotry in all of their forms” and that he was “appalled by the nature of the letters. He added: “Religious intolerance has no place in our society. Incitement to hatred and incitement to violence are offences under our laws.”

The letter states that: “Your very presence in our country is destroying our heritage and culture and we are calling on our countries’ people to attack any Muslim they come across in shops, taxis or mosques or any other place they come across them.”

Loyalist extremist thinks only Muslims should be charged with encouraging crime

Willie Frazer as Abu HamzaProtestant Coalition co-founder Willie Frazer appeared at court in Belfast yesterday dressed up as Abu Hamza. You might think that he was trying to draw a parallel between himself and another extremist who has incited hatred on the basis of a warped interpretation of his religious beliefs.

But no. Frazer has been charged under the Serious Crime Act 2007 with encouraging the commission of criminal offences in a speech he made in January during the Belfast flag protests, and he was protesting against a Loyalist militant being prosecuted on the basis a piece of legislation that he claims was meant to be used only against Muslims.

Muslim-prayer-row firm to make charity donation

The security firm whose employee told two Muslim women to stop praying in a Dublin park has agreed to make financial donations to children’s charities in the Middle East.

The women were told by the official to end their prayers “in case they break their backs” and sue Dublin City Council. The man, who has been suspended from his job, honked his horn and told the women they needed a permit while they were praying in Griffith Park, Drumcondra two weeks ago.

One of the women, a mum-of-three named Sajida, told the Herald that she fears other Muslims in Ireland have suffered similar “hurtful abuse”.

Muslim women told they were banned from praying in Dublin park

A warden has been suspended after allegedly telling two Muslim women they could not pray in a park. An investigation has been launched after the women claimed that were left terrified and humiliated by the incident in Ireland.

Manguard Plus, which is contracted by Dublin City Council to enforce park by-laws, has apologised and launched a full investigation into the incident. Bill Brown, managing director, said he is trying to contact the women who he admitted had been asked to “move” on the day.

“I can confirm an employee has been suspended on foot of an incident that occurred on August 10,” said Mr Brown, who is trying to determine exactly what words were used. “Whatever the guard said it was contrary to his training and contrary to his instruction. There is nothing to prevent any kind of praying in a park. We are completely at fault,” he added.
