Livingstone chooses Muslims over gays, Yale students are told

“This month’s riots in the immigrant ghettos outside Paris are only the latest manifestation of a continent in decline. Expressly, Europe has abandoned its culture. Thus, it has lost the means by which to assimilate Muslims who have shown no inclination to emulate those who seek American citizenship and accept the pluralistic values our country represents…. A proper analysis of Great Britain’s attempts at integration of Muslims is far too great a task for a newspaper column, but the behavior of the mayor of that country’s capitol city is cause for distress.

“On first glance, London’s gay community could have no better friend than Ken Livingstone. A legendary member of the far-left wing of the Labour Party, the mayor has been an outspoken advocate for gay rights. He started the first Partnership Register in the United Kingdom. He regularly attends the London Gay Pride Parade. He has worked with his city’s police force to crack down on homophobic crime. In spite of this flawless record on gay rights, Livingstone has repeatedly expressed support for radical Islamist cleric Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi, a Qatar-based imam whom the mayor hosted at City Hall last year….

“Livingstone holds the value of ‘multiculturalism’ as the highest of all, even if that means respecting cultures that seek to destroy ours. The risk of offending a single Muslim is too onerous for Livingstone to condemn those who glorify terror. During the Cold War, the term ‘useful idiot’ (ironically coined by Lenin) was applied to those in the West who excused away or completely ignored the atrocities of Communism. ‘Red Ken’ Livingstone, as he is affectionately known, was a useful idiot then and is no less a useful idiot of the Islamofascists now.”

The usual right-wing American rubbish, assisted by quotes from Peter Tatchell and Brett Lock of Outrage.

Yale Daily News, 1 December 2005

Over at Jihad Watch, Robert Spencer draws the appropriate conclusions: “This article shows why it is so important for Westerners to drop the outmoded language of Left and Right, as I have argued many times: there are those who are interested in defending Western civilization against the jihad, and those who aren’t. Ken Livingstone isn’t.” Spencer spells out his own tactical recommendation: “Opponents and proponents of gay marriage … need to unite now and defend against a common enemy who would render all such controversies moot.”

Dhimmi Watch, 4 December 2005

Rather redundant advice, I would have thought. Tatchell, Lock and their friends long ago adopted the position that, in order to pursue their vendetta against Islam in general and Dr al-Qaradawi in particular, they are more than ready to form a bloc with the anti-Muslim Right.

‘Giant mosque planned by extremists for London Olympics site’

The Sunday Times report that the Muslim proselytising organisation Tablighi Jamaat is hoping to raise finance for the construction of a new mosque as part of the Olympics redevelopment in London doesn’t find favour with the extreme Right. One website quotes that reliable source the Middle East Quarterly (founder: Daniel Pipes) to the effect that Tablighi Jamaat provides the ideological inspiration for al-Qaeda. “No wonder they want to erect a giant mosque and Islamic complex at the Olympic Games 2012. And the multiculturalist appeasers in Newham council, assisted by the appeasing fools in Blair’s government, will probably be jumping for joy to prove that Britain is tolerant of Islam by encouraging the construction of this proposed temple of terrorist ideology.”

‘Bicultural Europe is doomed’ – Torygraph columnist predicts civil war

A new right-wing take on the multicuturalism debate. Mark Steyn asserts that it is not the co-existence of multiple cultures within a society that is a problem but the supposed fact that in Europe there are only two cultures – Muslim and non-Muslim. With its “ageing native populations, and young Muslim populations”, Europe is heading for inevitable confrontation between these two irreconcilable cultures – “you can’t buck demography – except through civil war”.

French problem affects rest of Europe as well

Haroon Siddiqui“France is proudly mono-cultural, insisting that its residents shed all their identities and ‘be French’…. Yet, when facing social problems, the French attribute them to their pluralism. To a lesser degree, Germany and others do the same. ‘Multiculturalism has failed, big time’, said Angela Merkel, on her way to becoming chancellor. But Germany never had a policy of recognizing all cultures. What it has is an immigrant population that long ago ceased to be only white and Christian. That’s what she was complaining about. So was former chancellor Helmut Schmidt, 85, saying of the 2.6 million Turkish Germans, that it had been a big mistake to have let them in.

“Immigration was fine until the wretched Muslims came!

“A second theme coursing through public debate concerns the adaptability or otherwise of immigrants/Muslims: ‘They do not integrate.’ ‘They do not fit in; they cannot fit in.’ ‘They live in France but are not of France’ (or Germany, Holland, Belgium, etc.). ‘They don’t consider themselves French’ (or German, Dutch, etc.).  But it is the French, the Germans and others who deny jobs to Arabs/Turks/Muslims because of who they are, while the latter cry out to be treated as the French/German/Dutch citizens and long-time residents that they are.

“This is a neat trick. You won’t let them forget their ethnic/religious identity but blame them for keeping it. You won’t give them jobs but blame them for not having any. You build barriers to integration but blame them for not integrating. You pursue policies of social and economic segregation that produce poor, crime-riddled ghettoes, but you accuse them of domestic Balkanization.”

The crescent of fear

Spectator Eurabian nightmare“… there have been whole legions of pundits wheeled out to offer an explanation. It’s deprivation, a lack of integration, poverty, unemployment, incipient French racism and so on. But the dreaded ‘M’ word has scarcely been mentioned at all; these were ‘young’ rioters or sometimes ‘immigrant’ rioters – they were never Muslim rioters. Islam was almost never mentioned … the suspicion persists that it is the North Africans who do not wish for integration – much as they might whine about a lack of employment opportunities – even more than the indigenous French…. It may well be that the motive for the rioting was nothing more than an inchoate grievance allied to youthful exuberance and a penchant for bad behaviour, but it was Islam which gave it an identity and also its retrospective raison d’être.”

Rod Liddle offers us his insights into the French riots.

Spectator, 12 November 2005

Regarding the French, Liddle assures us: “Of all the countries in Western Europe, they have pursued the most extreme form of that discredited ideology, multiculturalism…” What an ignorant prat.

Who said that multiculturalism has failed?

Who said that multiculturalism has failed?

By Ken Livingstone

Morning Star, 12 November 2005

Against a backdrop of the London bombings, the scenes in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina and the riots in French towns and cities, a furious debate on racial equality and community relations has unfolded in the media over the summer and autumn.

After the terrorist attacks in July, some commentators and newspapers urged London to abandon its policies of respect for different cultures and celebration of diversity – in favour of what some described as the “French model.”

The suggestion was that London, by celebrating the contribution of different cultures to our city, was emphasising differences rather than what people have in common and encouraging “segregation.”

Only this week, writing in Daily Express, Leo McKinstry ranted that “we are living in the shadow of fear because of our rulers’ attachment to the twin dogmas of mass immigration and cultural diversity.”

“Without giving us any say,” he claimed, “they have imported wholesale the problems of the Third World – from corruption to superstition, from tribalism to misogyny – into advanced, democratic, Christian cultures.”

Faced with the events in France, the opponents of multiculturalism have had to perform unedifying contortions.

Melanie Phillips of the Daily Mail inverts reality by claiming that France had abandoned the French model, arguing that the banning of the hijab and other religious symbols was “too little, and maybe too late” and that the warning from France was that “we must end the ruinous doctrine of multiculturalism and reassert British identity.”

The truth of course is that the French model is fundamentally different to that of multiculturalism – as the ban on the hijab so clearly underlines.

But the critics of multiculturalism are simply wrong about what is happening in Britain.

In reality the Greater London Authority’s research shows that the real trend is not of “segregation” of ethnic minorities, but of increased dispersal as new communities become established over time.

Blame mass immigration and cultural diverity – Leo McKinstry

“France’s experiences are hardly unique. Throughout western Europe, societies are scarred by tension. In the past week, there have been Muslim-led riots in Denmark, while in Holland the assassination of film-maker Theo Van Gogh by a Muslim fundamentalist last year left a legacy of racial divisions. Britain is still struggling to cope with the fact that we have home-grown Islamic terrorists in our midst….

“The growing strife points to a comprehensive failure in social and immigration policies. France and Britain should be enjoying the stability brought by decades of unprecedented peace and prosperity. Instead, we are living in the shadow of fear because of our rulers’ attachment to the twin dogmas of mass immigration and cultural diversity. Without giving us any say, they have imported wholesale the problems of the Third World – from corruption to superstition, from tribalism to misogyny – into advanced, democratic, Christian cultures. In large swathes of urban Britain and France, the indigenous people can feel like aliens…. Through our welfare systems, taxpayers of Britain and France are subsidising idleness among those who appear to despise Christian civilisation.

“With lies, twisted ideology and institutional capacity for self-loathing, the political establishment has erected this vast edifice of cultural diversity but it is the ordinary people of Europe who have to live with bombs on our trains and burnt-out cars on our streets.”

Leo McKinstry in the Daily Express, 7 November 2005

Writers like McKinstry and Melanie Phillips almost succeed in making the BNP sound moderate.

‘French violence is a warning to Europe’ fascists claim

“It is becoming increasingly obvious to all indigenous Europeans that the multi-cultural experiment, forced upon almost every western European country in the past 40 years has well and truly failed, and all those European nations which contain a potential fifth-column of inassimilable Muslim and African immigrants, from the UK to Italy, Spain to Sweden must question just how those in charge of law enforcement are today prepared to deal with a similar situation across towns and cities in their respective nations.”

BNP news article, 6 November 2005

‘Eurabia on the rampage’

Mad Mel offers her take on the French riots, drawing her inspiration from Jihad Watch and Bat Ye’Or. “Multiculturalism, the doctrine that governs Britain and Europe and which grew out of a war upon their values from within by allowing the values of minorities to trump the majority, has been applied by the west to appease an ideology that has declared war upon its values from without.”

Melanie Phillips’s Diary, 4 November 2005

Of course, the distinguishing feature of French policy is in fact that it rejects multiculturalism in favour of secular nationalism. As a number of commentators have pointed out, this is a contributory factor in the current unrest, as it is difficult for the government to address the problems of oppressed communities when officially these minority cultures do not exist – everyone is supposed to be a French citizen and by definition enjoys equal rights.

When Melanie Phillips and her fellow right-wingers rail against multiculturalism, it’s clear that what they’re really having a go at is the existence of a multicultural society rather than multiculturalism as a policy. It is essentially a racist argument against the very existence of minority communities – at least when those communities are Muslim, that is.

More offensive right-wing drivel about the Paris riots

Paris“Lax immigration policies, prostration to the god of multiculturalism, and the refusal to fight fire with fire are three reasons why Muslim ‘youths’ in Paris are rioting in the streets. As I see it, the religion of Islam is inherently incompatible with the concept of individual liberty, a crucial component of western countries. It’s no accident that a culture like the West and a nation like the United States were envisioned and created by people who were either Christians and/or biblically literate and/or respected the Christian tradition. In countries under Islamic law, there’s no such idea as ‘individual liberty’. You’re either a Muslim or in danger of having your throat sliced open.”

La Shawn Barber’s Corner, 3 November 2005

This analysis is wholeheartedy endorsed by Robert Spencer, who heads his post “French rioters continue to prove multiculturalist relativism a dismal failure”. It appears to have escaped Barber’s and Spencer’s attention that official state policy in France is resolutely anti-multiculturalist, requiring as it does the subordination of minority cultures to the dominant French “national” culture. But never let facts get in the way of a right-wing cliché, eh?

Jihad Watch, 3 November 2005

Right-wing deputy Philippe de Villiers, leader of the Mouvement pour la France, who has said he wants to “stop the Islamization of France”, told RTL radio that the problem stemmed from the “failure of a policy of massive and uncontrolled immigration”.
