Hainault: Muslim-run community centre that faced ‘racist’ opposition is under fire again

Hainault community centreA trustee of a Hainault community centre that is under investigation by Redbridge Council believes it is being unfairly targeted.

New North Road Community Centre in New North Road, Hainault, opened on September 1 as a multi-faith community centre. But last week, a group of residents submitted a petition to the council, as they believe it is being used as a mosque, making people of no or other faiths feel excluded.

Dr Sohail Hameed says the centre does provide for the whole community. He said: “Our main aim at the moment is raising the standard of education. The hall is mostly used by teachers. People do their daily prayers here but I am a GP and I pray in my office too. There is no breach of planning conditions.”

Muslim leader attends seminar, nearly banned

OKLAHOMA CITY — The leader of a Muslim advocacy group in Oklahoma attended a law enforcement seminar Friday at the state Capitol despite organizers’ attempts to ban him.

Adam Soltani, director of the Oklahoma chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, initially was told he could not register for Friday’s seminar entitled, “Iran, Hezbollah and the Drug Cartels: Counterterrorism Considerations,” which was open to law enforcement and some members of the public. The seminar, which qualifies for continuing education credit for Oklahoma law enforcement, included speakers that Soltani described as “anti-Muslim extremists.”

The event was held in Oklahoma House of Representatives’ chamber and sponsored by the House’s Counterterrorism Caucus, an informal group formed by state Rep. John Bennett. The Sallisaw Republican is a Marine Corps combat veteran and fierce critic of Sharia law.

Solanti said he was told the seminar was full and he couldn’t attend by a Washington, D.C.-based attorney working with the caucus, Michael Hoehn. Hoehn and other event organizers stood watch at the gallery entrances and questioned some of those who tried to go inside, but Soltani entered anyway and watched the seminar from the gallery.

“This would be laughable if it didn’t pose a serious risk of prejudice to Oklahoma’s Muslim community,” said Ryan Kiesel, the head of the Oklahoma chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union, which has called for the state’s Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training (CLEET) to withdraw accreditation for the course.

“And I think CLEET’s reputation has been hijacked by conspiracy theorists and political opportunists, and if they want to restore their reputation, they need to withdraw accreditation for this continuing course,” Kiesel added.

Muslim students pray in the rain after Queen Mary University denies them access to facilities

Queen Mary students pray in rain

Hundreds of students at Queen Mary University in London, braved the rain today to pray outside, in protest against what they claim is inadequate resources for Muslims on their Mile End campus.

It was their second ‘prayer protest’ in two weeks, with the student union counting 350 demonstrators last Friday. Muslims account for 20 per cent of the student body, according to Islamic Society representatives.

Previously, the college’s 20-year-old Islamic Society had been able able to book several large communal spaces for congregational Friday prayers. But from the start of this academic year, students have been told the rooms are unavailable.

National Report Dearborn hoax

Lawyer challenges French veil ban, Cassandra Bélin’s trial postponed

A French lawyer has launched a new constitutional challenge to France’s burka ban as part of the defence of a woman whose arrest for wearing Islamic face-covering sparked riots in the French town of Trappes earlier this year. A court in Versailles postponed the trial of 20-year-old Cassandra Bélin until 11 December in order to consider her defence team’s claim the charges against her are unconstitutional.

Bélin, who was not present at the opening day of the trial, was facing trial for defying the ban and insulting a police officer. She denies police claims that she told them, “Allah will exterminate you!” The defence has requested a special procedure by which the country’s Constitutional Council would review a law that has already passed.

Geller and Spencer invent lying story about ‘Muslim mob’ attacking Jewish family in Sydney

Both Garibaldi of LoonWatch and Sheila Musaji at The American Muslim have taken up a disgraceful story, “Australia: Muslim mob severely injures five Jews in an unprovoked anti-Semitic attack”, that was posted by Robert Spencer at Jihad Watch and then crossposted by Pamela Geller at Atlas Shrugs.

Spencer and Geller reproduced an article from the Sydney Morning Herald headlined “Five people hospitalised after brawl in Bondi”, which reported the shocking story of an apparently racist attack on a Jewish family near Sydney’s Bondi Beach.
