Lib Dem parliamentary candidate calls for niqab ban

Lennon Nawaz and CarrollFresh from assisting the former (but entirely unreformed) English Defence League leader Stephen Lennon to carry out a cynical rebranding exercise, and then joining his protégé in spreading inflammatory anti-Muslim rumours, Quilliam’s Maajid Nawaz has now taken up the battle against the niqab.

In an article for the Daily Mail‘s RightMinds blog, Nawaz declares: “It’s time we tackled head on the genuine security concerns and social consequences of face-veiling in modern Britain.” The Mail, of course, is notorious for its PC-inspired reluctance to address that issue.

Golden Dawn threatens protests against Athens mosque

Athens mosqueGolden Dawn has pledged to organize mass protests against the construction of a mosque in central Athens after the tender for the project was awarded earlier this week.

The neofascist party said the awarding of the contract was an “unprecedented provocation” and that it would use its position “within Parliament and mainly through mass, powerful demonstrations” to prevent the mosque being built.

Pigs’ heads on stakes found at site of planned mosque in Leipzig

Gohlis anti-mosque campaign launchWhen the call came into the Leipzig fire department late Thursday, it sounded routine: A small refuse fire in a dumpster.

But the location was a bit odd, on the site of what is planned as the first mosque to be built in the former East Germany since the fall of the Berlin Wall.

And, when firefighters arrived, there was a small trash fire, but the situation next to that was anything but routine: Five severed pig heads, on stakes and driven into the future mosque’s ground, above a trough of what appeared to be pig blood.

Tariq Ramadan plots the conquest of the West

Alan JohnsonWe’ve remarked in the past that depicting Tariq Ramadan (Professor of Contemporary Islamic Studies in the Faculty of Oriental Studies at Oxford University) as some sort of dangerous extremist is a sure sign that Islamophobia has descended into complete dementia.

Judging by his article in the Telegraph denouncing the invitation to Professor Ramadan to deliver the annual George Orwell Lecture in London this week, Alan Johnson (pictured) would appear to be among those who have waved goodbye to rational thought on this subject.

Muslim text protest sows hostility

The Orlando Sentinel has a good editorial condemning the Volusia County school textbook campaign. It argues:

“This concocted controversy calls to mind another appeal to antipathy toward Muslims – the ongoing effort in the Florida Legislature to ‘protect’ state courts from the non-existent threat of Islamic Shariah law.”

Volusia school textbook counter-protest

A Volusia County School Board meeting where protesters planned to raise objections to the way a high school history textbook portrays Islam was canceled before it started Tuesday after the U.S. Department of Justice passed along information that raised “substantial safety concerns” among school officials.

The announcement came as about 75 demonstrators gathered outside the School Board office, engaging at times in heated debates about how public school textbooks should deal with religion.

That debate will now be left to another yet-to-be-determined day when the School Board will meet with additional security measures in place, according to a statement released late Tuesday by district spokeswoman Nancy Wait. Longtime board observers could not remember another time when a meeting was canceled over security issues.

Russia’s march toward ruin

Nationalist demonstrator Moscow November 2013The Russian March, a yearly demonstration of Russian nationalist groups, was held Monday in Moscow and in 100 other cities across the country. Never before has this march been held amid so much xenophobia and intolerance in Russian society. Never before have members of the ruling elite, including members of the State Duma and the Kremlin, so publicly and openly made anti-migrant and xenophobic statements. Not surprisingly, 40 percent of Russians now say they support holding the Russian March, according to a recent poll by the Levada Center.
