Boxing promoter faces racism probe after vicious Facebook comments against Muslims

Alex Morrison with Ricky BurnsThe manager of boxing champ Ricky Burns is facing a racism probe after a hate-fuelled rant about Muslims appeared on his Facebook page. The posts on Alex Morrison’s page refer to Muslims as “deceitful scum” and “pigs” and urge people to boycott their businesses.

Bosses at the British Boxing Board of Control are to discuss the outburst at a meeting this week and will ask Glasgow-based Morrison, 72, to explain. A source said: “The board agree that what’s on Alex’s page is racist and brings the sport into disrepute. They’ve been made aware of the comments but been unable to officially discuss them. That will happen in the next few days and he’ll be asked for an explanation.”

Edinburgh mosque defends school trips practice

Muslim women who conduct tours at the Central Mosque have defended the practice of inviting school trips to gain an understanding of their faith.

School groups from as far away as Newcastle and Inverness regularly travel to take part in weekly tours around the King Fahd Mosque in Potterrow.

Each group is met by a member of the Muslim Women’s Association of Edinburgh (MWAE) who shows them the building’s main rooms – the main prayer hall, the multi-purpose room and the library.

The only stipulation made is that no shoes are worn in the main prayer hall. No demands are made for
females to cover up and children are not asked to take part in any religious service.

Pupils withdrawn from trip to Edinburgh mosque

Edinburgh Central MosqueA race row has broken out after almost a third of the children due to take part in a school field trip to a city mosque were pulled out by their parents.

Children from Newtongrange Primary visited the Central Mosque in Potterrow, but from an original group of 90 pupils, 28 were withdrawn.

The trip had been organised to help educate the primary one, two and five pupils about other religions and cultures. But one parent today said they didn’t want their child “mixed up in the hate being preached in mosques”.

Edinburgh: Racist messages spark Twitter hate crime probe

Misread banner starts storm of racial hatred

Achill Island CSC banner

The Irish radio station Newstalk reports on an outbreak of Islamophobic (and anti-Catholic) hysteria in response to a banner displayed by Celtic supporters at the Scottish cup final. The banner featured the words “Achill Island C.S.C.” (Celtic Supporters Club) but was misread by some observers as “Achill Islam C.S.C.”, provoking a storm of angry tweets from bigots eager to denounce Celtic and its fans.

Police step up patrols at Scottish mosques

Police have stepped up patrols at Scottish mosques following the brutal murder of a soldier.

Drummer Lee Rigby, 25, who served in Afghanistan, was butchered by two men in Woolwich, London, in the name of “Allah”. Four people, including two men shot by police, have been arrested in connection with his death.

Chief Superintendent Grant Manders, Safer Communities, Police Scotland, said: “We are acutely aware that some extremist groups or misguided individuals may use this horrendous attack as an excuse to commit hate crime. We will have extra, high visibility patrols around Scotland’s mosques to reassure the public.”

Another flop for the SDL

SDL protest Dumfries 2013 (2)The Scottish Defence League’s anti-mosque protest in Dumfries yesterday (which had been publicly repudiated by local people) attracted a small turnout – from photographic evidence, fewer than 30 people, though the SDL itself claimed “100 patriots” were in attendance. Despite the low numbers, it still resulted in four arrests.

More of Nigel Farage’s troops exposed as bigots

Nigel Farage UKIPNigel Farage’s UKIP party is still riddled with racism… despite his claim of a crackdown.

A Sunday Mirror investigation has discovered sickening rants on the Facebook pages of party officials. Details of their vitriol emerged only days after Eric Kitson quit as a councillor in Stourbridge, Worcs, after we exposed his internet slurs against Muslims and Jews.

Mosque objectors’ shock at SDL march

SDL Glasgow February 2012(2)A horrified Dumfries couple yesterday slammed an anti-Islamic group which is using a story about them to promote a protest march.

Raymond and Eleanor Ingram opposed a neighbouring mosque’s planning application to transform a store into overnight accommodation. The Annan Road residents launched a petition against the move because they are fed up with people attending the mosque parking in their drive.

But they were “stunned” to find that their objections to the Dumfries Islamic Society plan were being used by the Scottish Defence League to rally support for a march in Dumfries on Saturday, May 18. The SDL copied a Standard story about the couple’s protest to its Facebook page.

Mr Ingram, 71, said: “We didn’t know who they were and we had no idea we were on this page until our neighbour told us to go online and look at it. We have absolutely nothing to do with this march and we don’t want to be associated to it. We want to make that clear to everyone.”
