Diane Abbott major speech: The age of intolerance

THE AGE OF INTOLERANCE

The Fight Against Racism, Anti-Semitism & Islamophobia in a Time of Austerity

Speech by Diane Abbott MP

Tuesday 25th November 2014
6.30-8.00pm
The School of African and Oriental Studies (SOAS), The Brunei Gallery, Thornhaugh St, Russell Square, London WC1H 0XG

As one of London’s longest serving MPs who has campaigned against racism and discrimination in all its forms her entire adult life, Diane Abbott MP is giving a major speech about racism, anti-Semitism and Islamophobia at the School of African and Oriental Studies.

Her speech is taking place against the backdrop of a surge in support for far-right parties across Europe and even in Britain as the nakedly anti-immigrant UK Independence Party is experiencing a growth in popularity.

Diane will highlight how throughout history we always witness a rise in racism during troubled economic times but she will argue that the important thing is not to give way to xenophobia and bigotry but to come together to campaign against it.

The speech is being supported by Operation Black Vote which supports Black communities further their position in politics.

Please note that the event is not ticketed and seats will be allocated on the day on a first come first served basis.

Update:  Here is the video of Diane’s speech:

Another fake anti-Islam quote from the far right

We recently remarked, in connection with the New Daily Patriot falsely attributing a quote to Zakir Naik, on how the far right happily post and repost transparently fake Islamophobic propaganda without making the slightest attempt to check its accuracy.

Here is another recent example, from Britain First’s Facebook page. It quotes Marco Polo as stating that “the militant Muslim is the person who beheads the infidel, while the moderate Muslim holds the feet of the victim”. As you can see, it has proved quite popular, having been shared nearly 1,800 times.

Tackling Islamophobia – Roundtable event at Parliament

MEND UAF roundtable November 2014

UAF and Mend held a joint event to discuss how to combat the rise in Islamophobia in Parliament. The event was hosted by Diane Abbott  MP and featured Muslim community groups. It was part of the annual Islamophobia Awareness Month programme of events in November.

This Thursday’s round table featured an in depth analysis of the concerning rise in Islamophobia and identified key areas where Government should make improvements if it is to be effectively challenged.

Diane Abbott MP highlighted how Islamophobia has reinforced and increased racism and outlined how the past decade has seen the mainstream media attack Muslims and migrants. Diane exposed the so-called debate of UKIP, which claims to talk about Europe but is actually a code for immigration, which in turn impacts on non-migrant settled black communities.  She said that the debate ends up benefiting the far right because if people have been convinced that immigration is the problem, you cant move far right enough for them.  Diane called for all communities to stand together and be united in the face of the rising racism and Islamophobia.

EDL protest in Luton draws around 400

22/11/14 Policing the English Defence League marchToday’s English Defence League (EDL) march in Luton passed without incident this afternoon (Saturday).

This was down to a high police presence and both the EDL march and protest being kept at a distance from a counter protest organised by groups such as United Against Fascism. Officers from police forces all over the country were brought in, from as far afield as the East Midlands and Essex, to contain the protest.

There was a small incident when speeches were being given by EDL members in the centre of Luton, when some members of the counter protest appeared, with a small number of EDL members trying to confront them, but swift action by the police prevented any violence.

Around 400 members of the EDL, with over a hundred present at the counter demonstration. Six were arrested for breach of the peace in Inkerman Street. One of those arrested, a 43-year-old Luton woman was found in possession of an offensive weapon.

Hate crime surge caused by media misrepresentation of Muslims

Shameela Islam-ZulfiqarA friend of Salford terror victim Alan Henning has blamed the media and far-right political parties for the upward trend in hate crime against Muslims.

Speaking ahead of an anti-Islamaphobia event hosted by MEND (Muslim Engagement and Development) in the city yesterday, Doctor Shameela Islam-Zulfiqar explained that the religion was being negatively portrayed in the UK.

She was a close friend to Henning, the 47-year-old taxi driver from Salford beheaded by the Muslim extremist group ISIS (Islamic State).

She told MM: “Irresponsible journalism, mainly tabloid sensationalism around a minority of extreme individuals seems to have become the focus of the mainstream media spotlight in recent months that unfortunately all Muslims are tarnished with and inevitably bear the brunt of.”

“This gradual but constant negative media focus serves to exacerbate the issues through groups such as the Far Right who feel justified in vilifying all things Islamic because the media in a sense legitimises and reinforces their stereotyping.

“The actions of a criminal that happens to be Muslim is immediately related back to the religion of Islam. This is not the case in other religious groups.”

The 36-year-old believes that the presence of ISIS has increased negative stereotyping of Islam as a whole, which she says is unjustified.

How ‘free speech’ is used to justify Islamophobia

Over at the London Review of Books Adam Shatz has an interesting review of two books – A Norwegian Tragedy: Anders Behring Breivik and the Massacre on Utøya by Aage Borchgrevink, and Anders Breivik and the Rise of Islamophobia by Sindre Bangstad.

Shatz places against the atrocities committed by Breivik against a background of rising Islamophobia in Norway. He concludes with some good points about how anti-Muslim bigotry has gone mainstream, justified by an appeal to the principle of free speech.

Church of England school taken aback by Ofsted rating amid extremism row

Ofsted logo parodyThe head teacher of the Church of England school in east London at the centre of a fresh controversy over alleged Islamic extremism, has expressed surprise at the Ofsted inspection findings that sent his school into special measures.

The Sir John Cass Foundation and Red Coat Church of England secondary, and a group of independent Muslim faith schools in Tower Hamlets, will be criticised by Ofsted over safeguarding concerns, following snap visits by the schools inspectorate in the wake of the “Trojan horse” affair in Birmingham.

The only maintained school involved, Sir John Cass, in Stepney, is to be downgraded from outstanding to Ofsted’s lowest rating of inadequate, primarily over Facebook activity by sixth formers linked to extremist material, and existing segregation between boys and girls in school areas.

Haydn Evans, the school’s headteacher since 1995, said: “We are surprised by the outcome of the Ofsted inspection, as we have always taken safeguarding very seriously. The teaching and results of this school remain good, which they have been since 1999, and my priority now is to address the issues that have been identified and work closely with the local authority and the diocese to return the school as quickly as possible to an outstanding school.”

The school’s trustee, the Sir John Cass Foundation, said it was greatly concerned by the inspection result. “We remain committed to addressing the leadership, management and safeguarding issues raised in the report and will in future weeks be assessing necessary action to return the school to an outstanding rating,” said Tony Mullee, its chief executive.

Kenny Frederick, a former headteacher at George Green’s secondary school, in Tower Hamlets, who retired last year, said Ofsted’s intervention at Sir John Cass appeared politically motivated and was at risk of doing more harm than good.

She said: “It’s a witch-hunt. It’s absolutely appalling. It’s a good school with a good track record. Parents, kids and staff will be up in arms. It’s not a hotbed of radicalism. The governors don’t want to take over the school.

“To put a school in special measures … what that does to a school and the community will only be negative. People will feel resentful. All we are going to do is alienate. If I was one of the kids, it would not be doing anything for my British values.”

Council rejects Islamic centre plan for South Hereford

Hereford Islamic Society planning applicationHerefordshire Council has rejected plans for an Islamic Centre in South Hereford.

The application was made by the Hereford Islamic Society earlier this year, its refusal was confirmed by the council this morning.

The decision did not go to the planning committee but was delegated to an officer.

Area councillor Chris Chappell said he accepted the concerns raised in relation to traffic and parking posed by the conversion of a ground floor shop in Holme Lacy Road. “But there were things said in the objections to this application that were inappropriate,” he said.

UKIP member kicked out for attending Britain First anti‑mosque march

Malcolm JacksonA member of Ukip has been kicked out of the party after attending a rally organised by the far right group Britain First, according to reports.

Ukip member Malcolm Jackson [pictured] said he has received a letter from the party saying his membership had been rescinded because of his “connections to Britain First” after attending their 15 November protest rally against a Mega Mosque planned for construction in Rochester.

[The new mosque will hold no more than 400 worshippers, which falls some way short of “mega”, and the site is in Gillingham.]

Jackson said he is not affiliated with Britain First – which describes itself as “probably the only group experiencing growth on the far right” – and was only marching with them to protest against the “evil cult of Islam taking over yet another part of our country”.

He said: “I have no connections with Britain First. I am not a member of any political organisation apart from Ukip, and I am not a member of Britain First. All I have done is take part, last Saturday 15 Nov 2014, in a march organised by Britain First, to demonstrate against a Mega Mosque being built on the borders of Rochester and Gillingham.”

He added: “If I had been with the crowd of left-wing thugs opposing the march against the Mega Mosque, would Ukip have made the decision to rescind my membership?”

Ukip have tried to distance themselves from Britain First ever since three of its members were photographed with the deputy leader of the party, Jayda Fransen, while both groups were campaigning in Rochester ahead of the upcoming by-election.

He’s not racist, but …

Graham MoxonA row has broken out over a school’s decision to serve a pork-free menu.

St Jude’s Church of England Primary School in Old Portsmouth is one of a number of schools in the city to use the menu.

The school also offers a halal menu to cater for children of different faiths. Eating pork is prohibited under both the Muslim and Jewish faiths.

But grandparent Graham Moxon disagrees with the idea. The 61-year-old, from Queen Street in Portsmouth, said: “I’m not racist – I have a Muslim son-in-law and a black son-in-law.

“But I get so angry at the fact that this country seems to be learning to keep the minority happy rather than the majority. By all means provide halal meat for the minority that request it but bring back good old pork bangers for the other kids.”

Mr Moxon tried to start an e-petition but the government wouldn’t accept it because they didn’t accept the instructions on what he wants to be done.

His grandchildren Jack Pople, five, Morgan Pople, nine and Kiana Moxon, 11, all attend the school. All the parents support Mr Moxon’s views.

Mr Moxon added: ‘I just want to see a decent menu for the kids. They should have good old-fashioned British food – the food that we were raised with by our mothers.

“They are tip-toeing around, trying not to upset anybody. The majority of those kids that go to that school have got to be Church of England children.

“By all means have halal meat if children require it. For the others at least give them the option of a pork sausage.”
