Virginia Bay councilman criticized for mosque claims

Last week, the Virginia Beach City Council voted 9-1 in approval of the city’s first mosque. But that lone “no” vote by Councilman Bill DeSteph has created controversy. He claims building the mosque would be a threat to national security.

The Council’s approval gave local Muslim nonprofit Crescent Community Center the green light to build the mosque at the intersection of Landstown Road and Salem Road. The group says the site will hold up to 225 people in its prayer hall.

DeSteph told media outlets last week he voted in opposition to the plan because he had information linking Crescent Community Center to the Mosque and Islamic Center of Hampton Roads, which he said has ties to the radical Muslim Brotherhood.

WAVY.com obtained a PowerPoint presentation that DeSteph emailed to a constituent with information about members from the Crescent Community Center and the Hampton mosque. The document raises questions about links to the Muslim brotherhood, but the statements are vague and fail to show any documented proof that anyone in the Hampton Roads Muslim community poses any threat.

One constituent wrote back to the councilman, taking issue with his so called proof: “This garbage is nothing more than a Joe McCarthy type attempt to insinuate through … innuendo … the mosque will be a haven for radical Islamists.”

Local paper condemns ‘shameful debate’ over Virginia Beach mosque

The Virginian-Pilot has a forthright editorial condemning the hatred displayed last week when Virginia Beach City Council approved an application to build mosque.

It concludes: “Rather than allowing vile rumors and veiled threats to stand as the last word on this subject, Virginia Beach’s leaders and citizens should condemn such behavior and make clear that their community is better than that.”

Wilders’ MPs wear badges featuring Nazi-linked flag in parliament

PVV MPs wearing prinsenvlagFour MPs for Geert Wilders’ anti-immigration PVV wore a badge in parliament on Wednesday featuring a flag associated with neo-Nazi groups, the NRC reports.

The Prinsen flag, which has an orange section rather than red as in the current Dutch flag, was adopted by the Dutch national socialist party NSB in the 1930s. It has since become a symbol of right-wing extremism and is used by groups such as the Nederlandse Volksunie and Stormfront.

MPs Martin Bosma, Reinette Klever, Machiel de Graaf and Harm Beertema wore the badge during the debate, the NRC said. The PVV declined to respond to question on why they had worn the flag.

CAIR says FBI ordered friends of Todashev to spy on local mosques or face arrest

CAIR Todashev press conferenceAn American-Islamic relations group released damaging information Wednesday that accuses the FBI of harassing friends of Ibragim Todashev. He’s the man an agent shot and killed in Orlando in May.

Deputies arrested Ashurmamad Miraliev on a warrant for threatening a witness in an Osceola County battery case from 14 months ago. The Council on American-Islamic Relations, a civil liberties group, claims the real reason they brought him in was to question him about his friendship with Todashev.

The group said the FBI even asked some of Todashev’s friends to spy on local mosques and threatened to arrest them if they didn’t. “Didn’t ask him anything about the alleged charges. Just interviewed him for over six hours trying to get as much information on Ibragim Todashev as possible,” said Hassan Shibly, director of the Florida chapter of CAIR.

Florida transit board reverses ban on CAIR bus ad

CAIR Florida bus ad

Reversing course, Hillsborough County’s transit agency will allow the Florida Council on American-Islamic Relations to advertise on its buses.

The unanimous vote by members of the Hillsborough Area Regional Transit board of directors is a sharp turn from where members were in August, when eight of the 10 present rejected the advertisement on county buses, citing promotion of religion as a concern. The vote, taken Monday evening, came after CAIR Florida filed a letter requesting an appeal.

The nonprofit organization says it is aimed at challenging stereotypes of Islam and Muslims and defending civil liberties.

Its ad features a photograph of eight people and the CAIR Florida logo, with the message: “Embracing Diversity at Work, Defending Civil Rights in The Community.” It is meant to promote free legal advice the group provides to people of all religions, races or national origin, the organization said.
