Illinois: ACT! for America Islamophobes disrupt meeting

Orland Park Library meetingWhat a southwest suburban library had promoted as an educational forum this week on Muslim life in America quickly turned into a contentious debate about Islam.

The tone for the Thursday evening event was set while the three panelists at the Orland Park Library were still introducing themselves. In the first of many interruptions, a half-dozen audience members stood up and demanded that everyone recite the Pledge of Allegiance. Library Director Mary Weimar denied their request. She explained that it wasn’t standard practice to recite the pledge at library events and requested that the attendees show more respect for the panelists.

So began a tense and often heated 90-minute debate – punctuated with frequent yelling and finger-pointing from audience members – over the practice of Shariah law, the meaning of jihad and the intersection of Islamic and American culture. While some audience members expressed disdain for Islam and its followers, the Muslim panelists remained calm in attempting to explain their beliefs.

Clermont, Florida: Council member warns of ‘wailing music’ from proposed mosque

Clermont City Council member Ray Goodgame.Clermont City Council member Ray Goodgame has told supporters that an Islamic group’s plans to build a mosque in south Lake County is “bad news” and warned of “wailing music” if the mosque becomes a reality.

The Islamic Center of Clermont, which had tried to get planning approval for an Islamic center last year, has purchased a 4.4-acre parcel at Hancock and John’s Lake roads.

Goodgame, first elected in 2004 and re-elected last week, raised questions about the potential mosque in a newsletter he emails to supporters. He called it “bad news” that the Islamic group had bought the property and has submitted preliminary plans for its project. “Their wailing music may become a nuisance to many,” Goodgame commented in his newsletter. “Let us hope they become community minded.”

Anwar Latib, who represents the Islamic center, called the councilman’s comments “unfounded” and based on lack of information. “I don’t understand what he’s talking about with ‘wailing music.’ There are mosques around the country and they don’t have wailing music,” he said.

Hindu man mistaken for Muslim refused service by US airline

JetBlueGawker reports on the case of New York-based data scientist Aditya Mukerjee, who the US airline Jet Blue refused to allow to join his flight to Los Angeles earlier this month.

It would appear that airline staff, who mistook him for a Muslim, were dissatisfied with Mukerjee’s answers to questions such as “We have some female flight attendants. Would you be able to follow their instructions?”

Aditya Mukerjee has blogged about his experience in a post titled “Don’t Fly During Ramadan”.

Boston: Litter sparks bus bomb scare

A Roxbury man dressed in what cops called “Middle Eastern garb” was arrested after he dropped his chocolate milk under a bus yesterday – sparking a bomb scare, but prompting his sister and a national Islamic advocacy group to question whether the charges are justified.

Amar Ibrahim, 27, was charged by transit police with littering, interfering with public transportation and disorderly conduct after the 9:30 a.m. incident led to the evacuation of a No. 66 bus in Brigham Circle and drew a bomb squad response, transit police said.

“Chocolate milk? Chocolate milk?” said a woman who identified herself as Ibrahim’s sister. “I’m just wondering, how does chocolate milk become a bomb?”

Bare Naked Islam hails the ‘courageous counterjihad efforts’ of EDL thug who attacked Islamic centre

Bare Naked Islam

As we noted in our report of the jailing of Geoffrey Ryan over an attack on the Al Falah Islamic Centre in Braintree, he is an admirer of Bonni Benstock-Install, the crazed Islamophobe who runs the Bare Naked Islam blog. It appears that this admiration is reciprocated.

ACLU: Muslims face more scrutiny for citizenship

ACLU Muslims Need Not ApplyA government program to screen immigrants for national security concerns has blacklisted some Muslims and put their U.S. citizenship applications on hold for years, civil liberties advocates said Wednesday.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California said in a report that the previously undisclosed program instructs federal immigration officers to find ways to deny applications that have been deemed a national security concern. For example, they flag discrepancies in a petition or claim they didn’t receive sufficient information from the immigrant.

The criteria used by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services to blacklist immigrants are overly broad and include traveling through regions where there is terrorist activity, the report said.

Pennsylvania Governor hires birther who says Obama’s a Marxist, defended a Nazi memorabilia dealer, and fears creeping sharia law

Ana PuigBetween plummeting polling and mounting ethics scandals, Tom Corbett is in a tough place politically. So it’s no surprise that he’s shaking up his staff, including a new chief of staff and secretary of legislative affairs.

One staff addition that isn’t receiving as much attention is Ana Puig, the founder of the Bucks County-based tea party group the Kitchen Table Patriots, who was just hired by Governor Corbett as the legislative liaison for the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue.

Puig is as tea party as they come. In recent years, she has promoted an event featuring topics including “The Muslim Brotherhood and creeping sharia law in America” and “Pro-Islamic bias and indoctrination in our public school textbooks.”
