One of two Ukrainian men held over bomb attacks near three mosques has been released without charge. The 22-year-old was arrested by detectives investigating explosions near mosques in Walsall, Wolverhampton and Tipton between 22 June and 12 July.
Another man, aged 25, is still being questioned about the explosions and the murder of 82-year-old Mohammed Saleem. He was arrested under the Terrorism Act and on Saturday police were given an extra seven days to question him.
Police said Mr Saleem’s death formed part of the wider West Midlands Counter Terrorism Unit investigation. The grandfather of 22 was stabbed in the back in Green Lane, Small Heath, in Birmingham, on his way home after attending prayers at his local mosque in April.
West Midlands Police said further searches in connection with Mr Saleem’s killing have begun in the area of Green Lane and Great Wood Road. Forensic tests are being carried out at the Delcam industrial unit off Talbot Way, Small Heath, where the man still being questioned was arrested.
Delcam’s chief executive Clive Martell confirmed the suspect, who is a student at university in Ukraine, began a temporary work placement with the company on 24 April. Mr Martell said: “Everyone at Delcam is deeply shocked and saddened by the events that have unfolded over the last few days. These arrests are unconnected to [the student’s] involvement with Delcam and we are cooperating fully with police inquires which are ongoing.”
Police cordons were expected to be lifted in Tipton and Wolverhampton on Monday.
Assistant Chief Constable Marcus Beale said: “I appreciate that there has been significant disruption whilst experts search each of the affected locations, but equally I hope that people understand the need to both ensure public safety whilst conducting a thorough investigation.”
